After Word War One motorized road transport is growing. In the second half of the twentieth century it is growing explosively as a result of the construction of a European road system. Venlo takes advantage too. In 1954 region Venlo based transport companies take care of about twenty percent of Dutch import and export by road. A quarter of all Dutch import and export by road pass Venlo border control.
Meanwhile Venlo harbour is less used, in spite of innovations some decades earlier.
